On 13 May, Anthropic told developers that from 15 June it would stop the Claude Agent SDK and third-party apps from drawing on normal subscription limits. Automated SDK usage would move onto a separate monthly credit, which for anyone running agents at volume meant a new bill.
On the day it was meant to take effect, Anthropic paused it. The message to developers was short: nothing changes for now.
What the Agent SDK Is, in Plain Terms
The Agent SDK is the toolkit developers use to build software that runs Claude automatically, without a person typing each prompt. It sits behind AI tools that do real work in the background: sorting an inbox, drafting replies, running multi-step tasks. Our own desktop app, Hermese, is built on it.
Why It Was Paused
Timing. OpenAI and Anthropic are in a price war, and a sudden new charge on the exact developers you are trying to keep is a bad move when your competitor is cutting prices. Anthropic read the room and held off.
What It Means If You Use AI Tools
If your business runs anything built on the Claude Agent SDK, your costs and limits are unchanged for now. Hermese and tools like it keep working as before. That said, "for now" is carrying real weight in that sentence. The change was announced once and can come back. If you depend on SDK-based automation, keep an eye on Anthropic's developer notices and know roughly what your usage would cost if the separate credit returns. No action needed today, just do not be caught out later.
